A little bit of history...
Punta del Diablo is
located on the Uruguayan Atlantic shore, at less than 300km (186 miles)
from Montevideo, and very close to the border with Brazil.
Its name comes from the important series
of shipwrecks that took place nearby in the remote times.
In 1935, Laureliano Rocha´s family -who
lived at Vuelta del Palmar, away from the shore- decided to move close to the
ocean so one of their ten children, Lirio (who had asthma), could be
beneficiated with the pure air of the location.
They built their ranch in the small
hills zone of the place, becoming the first inhabitants of Punta del Diablo.
Its formation as a fishermen village ís
deeply linked to the important presence of sharks in the water of the area.
In the year 1942, the international
demand of vitamin A increased. This vitamin was specially destined to the Worl
War II soldiers, who took it in order to get a better vision.
The shark liver is a very good source of
that vitamin.
Looking for this kind of prey is that
families of fishermen started to arrive, mainly from Valizas, and slowly
established in the place, building ranches, sheds and started to construct
their artisanal fisheries boats.
The shark merchandising extends to Asia
and its salty meat -also called "bacalao criollo" (local cod)- has
plenty of consumers in the Uruguayan market.
Later, since the material that some of
the artisans of the area use to do their pieces come from the remains of shark
fishing, as well as from other marine species, and from many different elements
that the ocean leaves on the shore, they also started to settle in Punta del
Diablo.
Nowadays many villagers still live of
fishing in the traditional way, but what´s really changing the village´s
situation is the new dynamism generated by its every day growing development as
a resort place.
The arriving of tourists from every part
of the world makes that walking through its paths become a very particular
multilingual experience.
The beaches of Los Pescadores, del
Rivero and the mysterious La Viuda get overcrowded with visitors expecting to
take with them a little bit of the charm of this place, without knowing that
they´ve been already bewitched and that, without noticing, their feet will take
them back to walk the delicious sands of Punta del Diablo, over and over again.
Traveller, if you´re coming for the
first time or if you´ve already been here, we are just one more of the options
where you can choose to stay.
